“It’s bad to see money become a runaway servant and leave us, but it’s worse to have it stop with us and become our master." ~C.H. Spurgeon, 1869 (Edited)
God’s blessings never put one in a bind.
All borrowing isn’t bad. But borrowing with bad motives is. Borrowing with no plan or intent to pay it back is. And borrowing that replaces worshipping God with my wants is.
Bad borrowing is always bad behavior. Bad behavior comes from bad character. God can’t, nor will He ever, bless bad character. As a rope binds a ship’s sail to its mast, I’m tied to the direction my debt carries me. The godly make sure their debt helps them steer a course that leads them to, and not away from, godliness.
God promises to supply my daily need, not my selfish wants. I invite misery when I insist on my wants at the expense of worshipping the God Who supplies my need. When my wants replace worship, I forfeit God’s blessing. After all, when I go into debt to get what I don’t need, God can’t use me to help meet someone else’s need. When I favor myself instead God, I miss out on the goodness of giving.
So then, if I must borrow it must be with this in mind: to never dishonor God in the binding, and to never dishonor the one to whom I’m bound.
Attack Point: Don’t borrow. But if you must, honor God in your borrowing.
