What is the The Muddy Boots Blog?

Armies exist to fight wars, and soldiers exist to fight them. Commanders prepare their soldiers to fight according to their expectations. They write down what they want soldiers to do and how to do it. They share their expectations by providing principles, procedures, and techniques to make sure their orders are followed, and their objectives are achieved.

A hard truth about life is that the world is at war: spiritual war. God is the Supreme Commander in this war, and He has a military title: Lord of hosts. As a commander, God also has an earthly army: Christians.

TMBB is a blog about God’s expectations for His soldiers in this spiritual war. TMBB is about sharing God’s principles, procedures, and techniques with His soldiers who fight spiritual battles.

I write TMBB for the Christian soldier. I write to prepare him for spiritual war. I write to help him win on the spiritual battlefield.

The Muddy Boots Soldier (Blogger Bio)

Why do I call this “The Muddy Boots Blog,” and why do I call myself a '“Muddy Boots Soldier,” you ask?

Well, a ‘muddy boots’ soldier is one who has firsthand experience and practical knowledge about the business of warfighting. He gained it by being in challenging field conditions. His perspective is shaped by tough, real-world situations. A muddy boots soldier is able to share valuable lessons learned from direct field experience. He has ‘boots on ground’ (BOG) knowledge, not just book knowledge.

I am a muddy boots soldier.

I am also a Born-Again Christian. I am a soldier in God’s army. By His grace, God ‘recruited’ (called and saved) me when I was a young boy. Sadly, I lived many of the years that followed as a disobedient soldier. I ran away from God. I deserted my post. I ‘muddied my boots,’ running to places no Christian soldier should go. I “did my own thing.” I lived in defiance to my Commander’s orders.

By His mercy, God used my chronic misbehavior to train me. He knew what I was going to do in disobedience and used my sin for His purposes. He used all of my ‘muddy moments’ all around the world to discipline and shape me.

By His grace, after over 20 years of service that included several deployments, God brought about my retirement from the military in 2022. He arranged things so that He would be the only commander I could serve under … and looking back on it now, I am so glad He did.

I am finally where I should be - under God’s command, doing what He has commissioned me to do.

So, I am a trained combatant. I am a credentialed military trainer. I am a servant-leader of soldiers. And I am an experienced combat planner who has served in nations and armed conflicts all around the world.

But more importantly, I have a passion for the Word of God. I am passionate about prayer as a peace-making weapon. I am passionate about preparing for spiritual battle.

I am well and long trained in the Bible - and specifically what God has written about spiritual warfare. I am uniquely trained to see the Bible through a ‘battlefield lens.’

I am blessed, and burdened, with a call to help God’s soldiers prepare to fight and win their spiritual battles. My desire is to overcome the enemy and march with my brothers all the way to victory at heaven’s gate!

Should the Lord delay His return and if I do not experience the rapture, I hope the sentiment of C.S. Lewis will also be said of me when I have passed:

“My prayer is that when I die, all of hell rejoices that I am out of the fight.”

I am a muddy boots soldier. And I am here to help in the fight.

TMBB Content

I regularly post content. Sometimes the content will share a principle. Sometimes it might teach a procedure or a technique. Sometimes you might see all three in a post. Every once in a while, I will share a story from my experience about what works … or doesn’t work ... in spiritual war.

There are five types of content available on TMBB: Muddy Bootprints, Muddy Messages, Muddy Moments, The Muddy Monday (Subscriber Newsletter), and Muddy Meetings.

Muddy Bootprints

A Muddy Bootprint is content I post on weekdays. These posts contain easy-to-grasp principles, procedures, and techniques for spiritual battle. They feature an Action Point (a ‘Daily Task’) and linked Scripture references.

Muddy Messages

A Muddy Message is content I post weekly. These posts contain Biblical doctrine about spiritual warfare and life on the spiritual battlefield. Like Bootprints, they contain linked Scripture references.

Muddy Moments

A Muddy Moment is a story (or testimony) that I post occasionally. These posts are stories from my personal experience. They will compliment a Bootprint or a Message. I will identify the other content somewhere in the story.

The Muddy Monday (Starting February 3, 2025)

The Muddy Monday is the TMBB Newsletter that I post monthly. The letter will include:

A Muddy Meditation

Spiritual Warfare thoughts and themes I see in Scripture and on the battlefield.

A Muddy Minute

A personal testimony from my ‘Muddy Boots’ experiences.

The Most Muddy

Extra thoughts from the most popular recent posts (like a ‘Director’s Cut")

A Muddy Method

A short Spiritual Warfare lesson (i.e., a skill, technique, best practice, etc.).

A Muddy Movement

Something for you to do in response to the Muddy Method!

Muddy Matters

Updates about my current writing projects (e.g. Book manuscripts I am writing), Sneak Peaks/Previews of upcoming book material, and other Announcements (e.g. Calendar Events, Book Launches, etc.).

Muddy Meetings (Starting in March 2025)

A Muddy Meeting is a live event (video or chat) that I will host occasionally. These events will include my thoughts about what I am writing, Q&A sessions with you, and time when you can share how TMBB is helping you and how I can make it more helpful to you!

Content Posting Schedule

TMBB content will be posted according to the schedule in the chart below:

Scheduled Time Off (Leave!)

Soldiers who do not, or cannot, ‘come off the line’ will soon become ‘combat ineffective.’ I don’t want to be a worn-out trainer. I don’t think you want to read one, either.

During the course of the year, I will take a couple (two, but maybe three!) weeks off. I will go ‘on leave.’ I will let you know when I do well in advance.
